Once you've created a custom audience using ConnectRetarget, your audience will be populated inside your Facebook Ads account, inside the "Audiences" section.
For every custom audience, Facebook will show the "size" of the audience (meaning: the amount of people that are currently inside that custom audience).
In case there are not enough people inside your custom audience, Facebook will say "Audience too small".
There are multiple reasons why this may happen - which we'll go through in this article.
Possibly reason 1: You've just added the ConnectRetarget PowerPixel to your site.
Only after you've installed the PowerPixel to your site, Facebook will start gathering behavioral data. This means that if you create a custom audience using ConnectRetarget, it only works for the traffic that has visited your site after you have added the PowerPixel to your site.
Solution: Once you've added the PowerPixel to your site, wait until at least a couple of hundred people visited your site.
Possibly reason 2: Your site doesn't have enough visitors.
Facebook requires at least an X amount of people to be included in an audience. This means that if your site is not getting any visitors, you won't be able to create a retargeting audience because the audience will be too small.
Solution: Add the PowerPixel to a site that already has visitors.
Possibly reason 3: You've used too many filters.
When creating your custom audience using ConnectRetarget, you can use multiple filters at once. For example, you could filter for "people who visited your site at least 5 minutes, and visited your site 5+ times, and scrolled to at least 75% of your page".
The more filters you'll add, the smaller your audience will become - simply because only a small percentage of your website visitors will match those criteria.
Solution: Create an audience with fewer filters.
Possibly reason 4: The PowerPixel isn't added correctly.
It's possible that for some reason, you haven't added the PowerPixel correctly.
Here you'll find instructions how to check whether a Facebook pixel is working correctly, using the Google Chrome Plugin "Pixel Helper".
Please double-check whether you've installed the PowerPixel correctly.
Possibly reason 5: You don't get "Facebook visitors".
When creating an audience, Facebook only includes people that they "know" (thus: have a Facebook-account, and are not browsing in incognito-modus).
Albeit rare, it's possible that amongst your visitors, you'll have fewer people who are a Facebook-user. You'll only be able to retarget those who have a Facebook-account.
